To Be!

This is my answer, today, to yesterday´s question!
I woke up in a better mood, well at the end yesterday was a very positive day, I just missed Kevin and didn´t feel human any more! This is the problem when one loves too much... one doesn´t exist anymore when one is apart!
I know, I am a little bit excessive, but please, bear with me!

And as you can see, I am back to work today... I feel definitively bigger than yesterday -oh God, I felt so small !- still a little bit pale and quite distorsed in the face, the head still hidden behind a book, but not so much and at least it is a sketch book today!
Even drinking my milk coffee out of my M Cup, a sign that I am on the best way back to my human identity!
Just Mousy, our neighbour, a friendly rosa mouse who cares for me when Kevin is away, still looks quite worried up to me... I guess she doesn´t trust the nonchalance which I exhibit in my chair... she is not daft, I would say!!!

Back, with Fringe and Horns!

www.goodaboom.com

Planet Goodaboom, Friday 28th September 2007

Yes, that´s me, with my new Scottish look, impossible to miss with my wild fringy hair and my sharp devilish horns, just back from one of the northerly world ends, specifically the Butt of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland!
Again 3 months have passed since my last entry here, not such a shame this time as we have been travelling 10 weeks in our wheeled box through remote lands, most of the time without any internet or phone connection. It might sound egotistical, just to disconnect like that for such a long time -and our families don´t miss one occasion to blame us...-, but to tell the truth, what a relief, and what a sensation of freedom!!!!
We had been thinking to put mobile internet in our Boomobile, but it seems that it will be for another time... we can always argue that it is still too expensive, and still not a reliable technology...
But of course it would have been nicer, to put our travel tale with photos and sketches gradually online, and surely much more interesting for our readers. We have just started now to put our travel tale, "10 weeks in a box" online and we can just hope it won´t have for you the taste of cold coffee! You´ll find there Kevin´s daily reports and photos and sketches from me of all the places we have been. I made only ink sketches on the site, without colours, because everything was grey, due to the incessant rain falls. I´am colouring the sketches now, at home, with pastel chalk and with the memory of how colourful it could have been.... or not! In fact, just putting down the colours I fancy, and never mind the truth !!!!

All these sketches have been made from inside the Box. In our travel I could never venture outside to draw or paint. Much too wet and much too cold. Luckily our Box has many windows and Kevin always parked it in such a way that I had a 360 ° panorama view. Thanks so much to him by the way, for his patience and his ability to manoeuvre the Boomobile, very difficult most of the time as I always insisted to go to the most isolated and least "roady" parts of the countries!
I also painted some watercolour sketches, more or less inspired -and more less than more!- by the views outside. I´ll present them gradually in my Carnets de Voyage, just need to polish them a little bit to make them presentable, and to digitalise them. Quite a lot of work!

I hope you will enjoy with us our 10 Weeks in a Box!

Two Proud!

www.goodaboom.com

Planet Goodaboom, Monday 26th March 2007

We were back working the Street yesterday, but to be honest, we totally missed the time table: we started at 14h instead of 11h! I just felt lazy, somehow, something which doesn´t occur very often, and I couldn´t really convince myself to face that kind of work. And furthermore, we didn´t even realise that they had changed the time in the night, so to add insult to injury it was also one hour later! Some German man, who had been in the Street Gallery early in the morning, came back in the afternoon and mentioned to me, that they changed the time, pointing at his watch in a comically impatient fashion. I guess he hadn´t noticed that I was not one but 3 hours too late!
By the way: I hadn´t even noticed that I still had my painting trousers on, which actually look like one of my wilder creations. The same guy called me and said:
"What is the price of this painting, Miki?"
I was surprised.
"How do you know my name?"
Well, he just smiled, pointed to the signature on the painting he was just holding in his hands, and to my trousers....
Indeed, it couldn´t be more obvious! I realised then just what I was wearing.

It was very windy and cold by the sea yesterday, and we couldn´t set up the easels. Never mind, I put the biggest paintings on the ground and the ingenious Kevin created very sophisticated, anti-wind devices -gigantic plastic clips to hold some of tiny frameless paintings in their display rack, which was itself anchored to the table with even BIGGER clips! The paintings almost disappeared within this mighty construction! But well, he was very proud of himself, this the most important thing, I guess...
Due to the weather, there were not many people walking around, but I still got a lot of attention and compliments, well, my paintings did!. We also had some very funny entertainment by a spanish saint woman called "Puri", a short name for "Purification". Kevin will tell you the story, I would miss out too many words to transmit the glory of the situation...

I -unfortunately- sold one of my favourite sketches, and to tell the truth, I haven´t many. A fast sketch of a village in the "Ribeira del Duero", a famous wine region north of Madrid. I was there two years ago, on a painting trip. Sold to a Spanish Art collector from Madrid, who worked in the past in El Prado.
I must say: I am quite proud!

So plenty of pride all round, for construction, and sales! (Despite, I´m sure, Saint Puri´s admonition that Pride is one of the 7 deadly sins....we´re working on the others!)

A Night Mare

www.goodaboom.com

Art Studio, Thursday 28 December 2006

I mentioned the other day (december 2006, A Waterproof Dog) that I spent Christmas trying to catch a wild black spanish horse under a blue sky... It was hard work, the Black Beauty rebelled more than once, but I finally succeeded in restraining him in a 70 x 100 cm big timespace cell...
Allow me to go back to the beginning of this adventure. It was in the Street Gallery, a fortnight ago. A spanish car stopped in the middle of the street and the driver opened his window. He looked at my bullfight paintings for a while, then shouted to me:
„Do you have horses?“
„No...“
He looked quite disappointed. My brain went into overdrive, thinking, well, I haven´t got any, but I could paint some for him... I had already painted horses on commission, and the people always loved them.
„Well, I could get some, I´m good at it!“
„What do you say?“
In the meantime all the traffic was backed up behind him and the drivers had started beeping impatiently. I repeated my answer, but the cacophony was so loud, that he couldn´t hear anything.
„Wait, I´ll park the car and come over....“
He came to tell me that he had a poster, and already tried to commission a painting from another painter, but somehow, the painter let him down after some weeks. He said I seemed to have such a talent for the representation of animals and he would love me to paint the horse from the poster. We discussed about the technique, size, price and delivery time.
He said he would come back before nightfall.
I didn´t really believe it. It happens quite often that people spontaneously want to buy or order a painting, but then at home they think about it twice and I never see them again! Well, normally it is the women who think about it twice, the men are generally much more ready to spend their money on these crazy things! Anyway, I was not too excited to get this commissison. I normally paint only horses with people, but that one, he said, was wild and lonely...

But THAT man came back with his horse.

„Oh God!“
I thought as I saw the poster. Without doubt it was a wonderful horse, a perfect horse... too perfect perhaps, everything being too perfect there, the horse, the blue sky, the blue sea... I instantaneously imagined a possible way to transform this perfection into romantic art, using only sepia and white pastel. I tried carefully to lead the client –oh god, I just wanted to write „the patient“!- to this view, but no, he wanted the painting exactly like the poster. And as big as possible, 100 cm wide would be perfect. At least I convinced him to let me do the painting in gouache, as I thought that oil or acrylics would increase the kitsch touch.
He wanted the painting for Christmas, but I had got a portrait commissioned for Christmas on the same day (see „Ho Ho Ho Christmas“)and promised him to finish it for the wednesday after.

And so it transpired that after finishing the Chrsitmas Baby I started the Black Horse on Christmas Eve. I must confess that I felt some panic about that horse in the days before. I had no idea if I could somehow avoid the kitsch and was quite sure, I couldn´t!
I painted the horse, I painted the blue sea, the blue sky...but I could not resist in the end to make the sky less blue and put some wild brushes around the horse to invoke the movement...
It is not for me to say if I succeeded in avoiding th kitsch trap: but here it is!

The client called me yesterday morning.
„You told me I should call today...“
I noticed a certain mistrust, I guess he was not sure at all, after this last experience with the other untrustworthy painter, that I would have really done it.
„The horse is waiting for you!“
„Oh, fine! He hasn´t galloped away?“
„Well... I must say, that he looks as if he could run away at any minute... you´d better come quickly!“
The client laughed and said, he would be there in 10 minutes.
Unfortunately I didn´t see his first reaction to the painting as I was busy on the phone. But his words of praise left me in no doubt about his feelings.
„It is impossible in this area to find a painter who can paint horses... of course, some paint horses, somehow, but they are not able to catch the character of the special horse... you, on the other hand, succeeded in capturing exactly the character of this pure bred spanish horse!“
He told me a lot about this spanish horse, and I must say that I wonder how I did it, as I never saw such a horse before! I must have felt his character, somehow, in the attitude, in the muscles, in the facial expression...
Anyway, my client was totally happy! And please, believe me:
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR ME: NOT THE MONEY, NOT THE SUCCESS, BUT THE CLIENT´S JOY!

PS: I would like to show you how I would have liked to paint this horse and let your taste decide which one is the better one. And when you order a painting from me next time, don´t forget that colours are not always an enrichment to art...

A Waterproof Dog

www.goodaboom.com

Art Studio, Monday 25th december 2006

Not quite a lazy Christmas for me. I am spending my day trying to capture a black wild horse, which I got as a commission last Sunday in the Street Gallery. Blue sky, blue sea, black horse: A „Night mare“! I´ll tell you the story and show you the horse when I catch him... if I succeed!

In case you are doubting: no, it is not the black horse on the photo. The dog... well, yesterday afternoon we went to the beach, with the intention to hand out the Happy Christmas leaflets to announce the birth of The New Star Goodaboom. It was not quite the right day to do it, as the weather was awful, and nobody dared to venture their noses onto the promenade. At least there were cars there and we put a 120 leaflets on them... Good Luck, Goodaboom!

The sea was rough, high waves as never seen before here. I walked close to the seas´edge to take some photos. In the background I heard Kevin consumed with laughter because some of the waves were overtaking me. By the way I´m amazed that my camera survived the shock... never mind the dog! He was there with 2 men –no respite for dog owners, they had to venture their noses!-, continuously casting stones into the sea to amuse the dog. Considering the height of the waves, the young dog hesitated to run after the first stones, but eventually could not resist. He gathered his pace.... and ran full into a wave! Within a fraction of second he had disappeared completely into the boiling foam. We all stared at the point where the dog disappeared, anxiously waiting for a glimpse of black to appear again within the big white chaos.

After one minute –I may exagerrate a little bit, but it really seemed a long time!- a black spot appeared again. At first it didn´t move at all, quite waterlogged I guess! As he finally gathered his wits he attempted to leave the sea with dignity...
Later, as the man tried to repeat the fun, the dog started running but always stopped short at the last moment before he reached the waterline. A fantastic example of how quickly dogs can learn... at least when the lesson is hard enough!
Eventually our doggy even demonstrated a certain blasé attitude to the high waves, turning his back on them... but he never went back into the sea!

There are 50 ways to leave your Lover...

www.goodaboom.com

Street Gallery, Sunday 17th december 2006

I have thought a lot, about which kind of things concerning my life on this earth may interest you. I came to the conclusion that I should mainly tell you about my life as a painter, which of course has become so important to me.

If you become addicted to Goodaboom -.and naturally, we expect it! -, you will see that I exhibit every Sunday on a pedestrian street in Albir. Of course only if „el tiempo no lo impide“, if the weather doesn´t impede it, as it´s been written for generations on the famous posters announcing the bullfights.
Many interesting things happen there, when I am “working the street“.
Last Sunday for example... I had a prominent visitor! Well, I had no idea that he was such a celebrity, but a man who accompanied him told me that he was a famous painter. The famous guy in fact handed me a publicity postcard of his website

As the 3 men in coats arrived, I was not present. I had to escape to my niece´s flat to satisfy a call of nature, as my usual street toilet was on that day out of commission: the door had disappeared, and it is was full of caca and the remnants of technicolor yawns! This, by the way, is one of the inconveniences of this avant garde gallery: the toilet is on the beach and principally used at night by the local heavy drinkers... Please take a moment to pity me!
Anyway,... I had left Kevin by the exhibition with instructions to sell as many paintings as possible. As I came back I found him in deep conversation with a man. From a distance I saw that the man was holding something in his hands, and looking at it with great interest. I thought it was one of my small paintings and Kevin had indeed achieved a sale. But as I came nearer I saw that he was looking at one of our „Brush with Poetry „ CDs“(by the way, have a look into this page...!).
„Hello!“
I said, without paying more attention to them. I am not really a social type, and I prefer to let Kevin entertain our visitors, he masters that task fantastically, and anyway, he is my agent now!
But soon the guy lost his interest in the CD and came to me.
„Are you the painter?“
„Yes...“
„You painted all these paintings?“
I am used to this question, so I have a ready made answer which normally invokes great admiration. I said:
„Yes!!!!“
But this time nothing of the kind happened. The man looked at me intensely, insistently, as if he wanted to tell me something vital without using words. I held his stare, trying to look comprehending, but in fact without any idea as to what the silence meant.
„But there are almost 50 paintings?“
He framed this as a question. I thought, what a strange thing to say, when I am supposed to have been a painter for many years....
„Well, much more I guess! But it is normal, isn´t it? I am a painter!“
He said nothing, just continued to stare at me.

In the meantime the two other men had joined us. The guy told me, that one of them was the scupltor who made the big steel anchor on the promenade, and the other one... well, sorry, I don´t remember what he was, but yes, I remember he was a funny guy with crazy hair and a gypsy look... he could have been one of the Gipsy Kings!
We all began some small talk, in which he asked me where I was coming from. He told me that he was himself living in Paris

„And what is your profession?“
he suddenly asked. I started to feel a little bit upset and to think. this man was trying to convince me, that I was not a painter.
„I am a painter, as you can see....!“
„But you live from it?“
He was still staring at me, this time as though he wanted to convince me I was not living at all!
„Yes...“
He looked quite surprised, but without any hesitation he offered his hand.
„Congratulations, I know how hard it is! I am a painter“
„Well, the truth is, that the portraits help a lot!“
Yes, it is hard to live from painting, and above all in such a place as Albir, where 80% of the population are pensioniers and 50% of them are painters, providing the whole family and friends with decoration for their new walls. Luckily not many of them are making portraits... of course they try, and I even spent a lot of time giving them portrait classes, but they rapidly give up: portraiting is very frustrating, and there is no way to hide a mistake in them...
„So, you are a painter too?“
Instead of answering he searched for a while in his bag. It was at that moment that the Gipsy King told me:
„Oh yes... he is a very famous painter!“
I didn´t really pay much attention to it. I had somehow the feeling that these two guys were kidding me. Then he handled me the postcard. I had a quick look at the painting „Paz en rojo“, and thought that the red-bearded green Jesus within it was also asking me: „Are you a painter?“

Just before they went away, the famous painter stared intently at me again and said:
„Miki, please....“
„Yes?“
„Please... in painting... make series! Don´t be dispersed!“
There were some seconds of silence. I was not prepared for this attack. Then I laughed and just answered:
„That´s me...“

I know that one might think „I am dispersed“.
Perhaps i am. But the fact is, I cannot always paint the same stuff, in the same colours and in the same style. I get bored very rapidly, I need perpetual change. I have no pretention to be called an artist if this demands one to stay blocked in a certain working style. I just want to paint, whatever and however I LOVE.

Before they left they admired the tiger-striped wooden drain cover that Kevin had made to prevent the bad smell coming as a result of the torrential rain two weeks ago. The painter said.
„THIS is really a work of Art!“

I thought: what an indirect compliment to MY work!

Anyway: it´s clear now what he meant before with the 50 paintings... a delicate way to tell me:

„There are 50 ways to leave your lover!“

Epilogue:

I just had a look on his site. Our visitor really IS a famous painter.
I will send him a christmas mail, so that we all may celebrate the birthday of the red-bearded green Jesus!
